What is an embroidered patch?
An embroidered patch is a fabric patch where the design is stitched in rayon thread onto a twill or felt base. The stitching sits on top of the fabric, which gives embroidered patches their raised, textured look. Sports clubs, schools, fashion brands, the military and emergency services use them for logos, crests and insignia, and they are just as popular on jackets, bags and accessories.
How are embroidered patches made?
Your design is digitised and loaded into a commercial embroidery machine, which stitches each colour in turn onto the twill or felt. The patch is then cut to shape and finished with a merrowed or heat cut satin border, given your chosen backing, and quality checked before it is sent.
How do you iron on an embroidered patch?
Set your iron to Cotton with no steam and iron the spot where the patch will go. Place the patch face up, cover it with a tea towel and press firmly for 30 seconds in a slow circular motion. Turn the garment inside out and iron the back of the patch for another 30 seconds, then let it cool for a minute. If an edge lifts, iron the back again. Not suitable for nylon, vinyl or leather. Iron-on is quick but not permanent: hot washes and tumble drying weaken the bond over time, so for anything washed often we recommend sewing it on, or using the iron-on to hold the patch in place before stitching.

Wash the garment inside out at 30°C. Avoid tumble drying, dry cleaning and bleach, which damage the thread and backing over time. Iron-on patches in particular last longer with a hand wash, or a few stitches around the edge.
Can you remove an embroidered patch?
It depends how it was applied. Sew-on patches come off by carefully unpicking the stitches with a seam ripper. Iron-on patches are harder: gentle heat softens the adhesive enough to peel the patch away, though some residue may stay. Hook and loop patches simply pull off and go back on.
