What is a woven patch?
A woven patch is a custom fabric patch where the whole design is made from thread, woven on a loom rather than stitched onto a backing. That gives a flat, smooth finish with fine detail and crisp edges, ideal for intricate logos, small text and multi-colour designs. They are used by fashion brands, schools, sports teams, workwear and the military, and we make them in a range of shapes, sizes and backings.
Woven or embroidered?
Embroidered patches are stitched on top of a twill base for a raised, textured finish that suits bold designs with thick lettering. Woven patches are made entirely from thread on a loom, so they are flatter and finer, and hold small text and more colours. As a rule of thumb: if you can read it on a business card, it will work as a woven patch.
How are woven patches made?
Coloured threads are interlaced on a loom to build up the design, so the design is part of the weave rather than stitched on top. That makes a thinner, more detailed patch with a smooth surface. The patches are then cut, finished with a border and given your chosen backing. We send a free digital proof before production starts.
How small can the text be?
Woven thread holds lettering down to about 4mm high, far smaller than embroidery. Below that we will suggest simplifying the design or going a size up.
